Building Cable

The patented Cable Master safely uses gravity to lower and place large amounts of cable from a reel through vertical ducts in building floors. After the lowering procedure, Riser Cable Support Collars are installed every 4 floors to secure cable from 5/8″ to 3 1/2″ in diameter. Available spanner bracket can be used in building risers with slots and can hold multiple collars. The whole process takes well under an hour to lower and secure a full reel of cable. This method has been used successfully since 1981 and is the recommended method for “pulling backbone in a vertical pathway” by the BICSI Institute.

Gravity Feed High Rise Cable Placing System

Set Up

  1. Install single front foot using three 1/2″ bolts provided.
  2. Slide the rear support frame into its seating position and tighten the handle by hand. Note that this handle is not intended to be removed during installation or use.
  3. Move Cable Master close to riser slot or conduit where cable is to be lowered and lay cable over rollers.
  4. Place top section of unit on assembled base, fold over tensioning adjustment wheel and lock the assembly with the pin and safety clip provided.
  5. Install the safety stop at the rear of the machine and lock the cradle using the pin and safety clip. Be sure the safety stop handle is at the top of the machine.

Lowering the Cable

  1. Place the cable reel as close as practical to the lowering machine and elevate it off the floor using your company provided reel stands.
  2. Move the Cable Master over the sleeve with the front foot lip on the outside of the conduit or slot.
  3. Turn the crank located on the side of the Cable Master to begin lowering cable through riser.
  4. As more cable is lowered, the crank will turn easier. Before enough cable is lowered so that the crank will turn by itself, apply more tension to the cable by tightening (clockwise) the tensioning adjustment wheel. Continue this procedure until you have lowered all the cable you will require in this sleeve.
  5. Tighten safety stop when finished or whenever the machine is unattended.

Supporting the Cable

  1. Select the proper Riser Support Collar size according to the diameter of the cable.
  2. Place Riser Support Collars every four floors starting at the floor directly below the Cable Master.
  3. Tighten the two 3/8″ bolts using a standard ratchet. The purpose of the Cable Master is to safely use gravity to lower and place large amounts of cable from a reel through vertical ducts in building floors. As it is lowered, the weight of the cable descending through the floors increases and requires additional deflection of the cable. This is accomplished by applying pressure via the tension adjustment wheel at the top center of the machine. A hand crank is provided at the side of the machine which allows the operator to control the descent of the cable. To halt the lowering of the cable or leave the machine, an emergency brake is provided at the rear of the Cable Master. When the process is to begin again the operator releases the emergency brake and continues lowering cable. After the cable is lowered completely, the operator installs Riser Cable Support Collars every 4 floors to secure the cable. Sauber’s Cable Master unit is made of lightweight aluminum-magnesium.
